For those of you who enjoy History, a fairly good account of the history of El Salvador, which explains the culture of Wealthy Landowners and workers who generally live in poverty, can be read here
and for those who can read in Spanish or have a trusted translator, here is a little information about our Land Owner.
I am not saying that our land owner should be compared to the Landowners who history shows lived in wealth, while the peasant farmers who worked their land suffered in poverty. But that just as history shows, the workers in the field are often overlooked or take for granted.
Our Land: The Land where the first Children's center of The Father's Heart Foundation will be established.
The 8 acres of land that we are fundraising to purchase is a 3/4 of the land owned by Don José Rutilio Quezada. Quezada was born in 1930 in Quezaltepeque and grew up with a love for organic farming and for reading. He is now a professor and author and resides in California, USA. This land used to be a shade grown coffee plantation. and was the inheritance left to Don Rutilio by his late father, who left a portion of land that extends from where our land is all the way to the San Salvador Volcano (I am not sure of the exact amount, but it is a few hectares of land). Don Rutilio and his 5 siblings decided to cast lots for the land, so that it would not be divided into small portions but ould remain as good sized coffee plantations. Almost all of his siblings have now moved away, only one is left in Quezaltepeque and is living a life consumed by alcohol. Most of the land has been divided up and sold and those living on the land are mostly squaters; former employees of the Quezada Coffee Plantation(s) (this is the history according to Don Manuel de Jesus Olaisola, they too are squaters. there house is just outside the property line of The Father's Heart Foundation, and is situated on Don Rutilio's brother's land)
Manuel began working on the coffee plantation at the age of 14. He never completed his formal education, but he did learn to raed and to write. He was a hard worker and by the time the plantation was abandoned (30 years ago)& the family began to move away (during the war) Don Manuel was left to care for the land. while the coffee continued to grow, unharvested, he began to harvest the 25+ species of fruit and to live off of the land.
Manuel and Maria moved into the small house, where they still reside, 50 years ago at the ages of 20 and 13. They have raised a small family there. Their son, who died in his 20's after falling from the back of an over-packed bus, leaving behind 3 children. and Two daughters who are now married, one daughter having nothing to do with her parents because of her husband. They also lost several children in miscarriage or premature birth.
We met Don Manuel in the Fall of 2008. He and Maria have faithfully cared for our crops, chickens and security. They have caught the vision for The Father's HEart Foundation and are looking forward to being grandparents to 84 orphaned and abandoned children.
It is our desire to build them a house. The house that they live in was built over 50 years ago and does not hold up well against rain and wind, or small creatures. A small house has been included for them in our MAster Plan, but now with Don Manuel's failing eyesight it is eminent that we build their house soon! We need approximatley $30, 000 to build this house
We have written to the land owner to request for his help in caring for Don Manuel, but we see it as our responsability, not only as his new employers, but as his friends and more importantly as servants of Christ.
Samuel brought Don Manuel to the hospital this morning to have an eye exam, and while he has had good health since the day we met him his eyes have quickly deteriorated (over about 2 weeks), to the point that Samuel had to lead him to the car and help him in, beacuse he could not see. We believe that God wants to be glorified in this situation and in the life of Don Manul and Maria. We know that God has the power to heal and that He can also chose to use medication an/or surgery to heal Don Manuel's eyes. or He may chose to allow Don Manuel to become completely blind and for us to care for him. It is our prayer that God would be glorified and that Don Manuel and Doña Maria would know Him personally (they have both grown up in the Catholic Faith (they would be "nominal catholics" as they do not attend Mass or really practice their faith) and they know a lot about God. Over the past year we have been able to share with them a lot, in both word and deed, what it is to have a personal relationship with Christ.
Please join us in praying for Don Manuel and for his wife. and also for wisdom for us and for provision! Adn if you feel lead to give, please contact us or click on the DONATE NOW link on our website: www.corazondelpadre.org
